How talking on youstillawake works
- Free. There is no payment and no subscription.
- Anonymous. There are no accounts, profiles, photos or names. You do not have to give your real name, and you should never share contact details.
- Text only. You talk by typing. No voice, video or images.
- Temporary. A chat ends when either person leaves, and the messages are not kept.
- 18+ only. You confirm you are an adult before you can use the site.
Start with the map
The live map shows people who are awake right now. Each light is someone with the site open. If you want to talk, say hi to someone who is open to a conversation. If nobody feels right, you can come back later, or read one of our guides while you wait.
Keep it kind and keep it safe
Strangers are people, and a good conversation is a kind one. Share what you are comfortable with, and nothing more. Do not share your address, your phone number, your social accounts, or any money. If someone makes you uncomfortable, leave the chat. If someone breaks the rules, use the Report button. Our safety tips explain more.
Talking can help, but it is not a replacement for support
An anonymous chat can help you feel less alone for a while. It is not counselling, and the person you meet is a stranger. If you are struggling with your mood, your sleep or your safety, a doctor, a counsellor or someone you trust can give you help that a chat cannot. See also our support page.
If you feel unsafe or very low
If you are thinking about hurting yourself, or you feel you cannot keep yourself safe tonight, please contact your local emergency number or a trusted person now. Do not wait for a reply from us.
