Feeling lonely at night

Loneliness has a way of growing after dark. The phone goes quiet, the messages slow down, and the house or the street feels emptier than it did in the day. If that is where you are tonight, you are not imagining it, and you are not the only one who feels this way.

Loneliness is one of the most common human feelings. Many people feel it most sharply at night, even when they are surrounded by family, friends, or housemates. It is a signal that you want connection, and wanting connection is healthy.

Why nights feel lonelier

During the day there are routines, errands, and other people around. At night those fall away, and we are left alone with our thoughts. Tiredness can make worries feel bigger, and a quiet room can make it harder to reach out. None of that means your life is empty.

Small things that can help

  • Reach out in a small way. A short message to someone you trust, even just "are you up?", can open a door.
  • Put on something familiar, such as a favourite show, a podcast, or music you have loved for years.
  • Get some fresh air if it is safe to step outside, or open a window for a few minutes.
  • Plan something for tomorrow, however small, so the day ahead has a shape.
  • Be as kind to yourself as you would be to a close friend who was feeling this way.

Finding people who are awake too

On youstillawake you can see a map of people who are awake right now, and each light is a real person who has the site open. You can say hi to someone who is open to talk, or leave a short note that drifts across the sky for others to read. Chats are anonymous, text only, and temporary. They are a place to be heard for a while, not a replacement for the people in your life.

Connection that lasts

A chat on a website can help in the moment, but lasting connection often comes from people you can see in daylight. Think about one group, one place, or one person you could get in touch with this week. Local community groups, volunteering, faith or hobby groups, and peer support services can all be good starting points.
